Whimsies Book Reviews

Saxen, Ron. The Good Eater (Buy it at Amazon) . Reviewed by Heather Diodati

Low self esteem, sense of failure and hopelessness, the feeling that you don't deserve happiness, a troubled childhood, eating to escape problems and feelings, destructive relationships, the rollercoaster of extremes: diet and exercise then bingeing and depression, feelings of being out of control ... does this sound like you?

I began reading Ron Saxen's book, "The Good Eater" one Saturday morning and couldn't stop until I had absorbed every word, finishing late that same night. For anyone who has had any kind of eating disorder or worries that they may have one, this book is definitely a must-read. Ron's descriptive account of his sometimes thrilling, often painful rollercoaster ride with relationships, careers, feelings and subsequent destructive binge eating and exercising patterns, speckled with his refreshing sense of humor, helps you believe that you can finally control your eating patterns.

Ron shares moments of his early childhood and relationships with his parents, siblings, relatives and friends and the beginning of his lifelong battle with BED or Binge Eating Disorder. His story continues with the extremes in his life contributing to his many destructive eating binges, leading to disgust and promises of "being perfect tomorrow". This eventually led to more disastrous extremes auch as consuming barely 1000 calories per day combined with, for example, running five miles, cycling twenty miles, completing a full weight workout and swimming twenty-five lengths all on four cups of coffee and a banana.

"The Good Eater" is a ray of hope for those with eating problems and will help you understand the contributing factors as to why this destructive behavior takes place. Armed with this information you are better able to reverse your way of thinking about food so that you have a chance at a happier life with normal eating patterns. Congratulations to Ron Saxen for writing this fascinating account. You're sure to enjoy his book!
